The Most Common Food Allergens

Do you have certain foods that you have to stay away from? According to the Food Allergy Resource & Education Association, there are only 8 foods that account for almost 90 percent of all food related allergic reactions. Although food allergies are most common in children, there are many people who suffer from food related irritation and discomfort. In fact, 1 out of every 13 children has some type of allergy to food. Having an allergy to food is also called “food hypersensitivity.” IF you think you or your child is suffering from this condition, schedule an appointment at Covenant Allergy and Asthma Care today! Here are a few important facts about the most common food allergens:

  1. Peanuts. Almost everyone has heard a horror story about peanut allergies in children resulting in anaphylaxis. However, by taking the necessary precautions and educating yourself on the risks of cross contamination, living with a peanut allergy can be manageable. Remember to check all ingredients, labels, and ask for special clarification at bakeries and restaurants to be sure food has not come into contact with peanuts. Remember, peanuts and tree nuts are not the same thing! If you have a peanut allergy, you might still be able to consume cashews, almonds, and other nuts that grow on trees. If you have a peanut allergy, carry an epinephrine pen with you wherever you go.

  2. Seafood. There are many different types of seafood allergens! Some of the most common include: fish, crustacea shellfish, and mollusks. Finned fish have their own allergen category, meaning you may still be able to eat shellfish of other varieties. Crustacea shellfish include things like crawfish, lobster, crab, and shrimp. The other type of shellfish allergy includes clams, oysters and a variety of mussels. If you’re allergic to one, you may be able to consume the other, although it may be safer to avoid shellfish altogether. It’s important to carry an epinephrine pen with you if you have a shellfish allergy.

  3. Dairy. Many people claim to have intolerance to lactose, and dairy has a bad reputation for giving people bloating, diarrhea and other discomforts. This occurs when the body has a difficult time breaking down the sugar, or lactose, in dairy products. As delicious as dairy products are, many times they can cause indigestion and many other gastrointestinal problems. If you notice discomfort after consuming products with milk, talk to your doctor. Babies can be allergic to milk, too!
