Protecting Young Children From Summer Bites and Stings | Covenant Allergy and Asthma
Summer is just around the corner, which means sunshine, activities and plenty of time outside. However, along with all the fun summer brings, stinging bugs and biting insects pose a very real risk for the youngest members of our families.
Time outside is a great way for children to explore the outdoors and develop their motor skills, but we know that as a parent, you want to do everything you can to protect them. We’ve compiled a quick reference guide to preventing bites and stings, so you can keep the kiddos safe in the summer sun!
Limit use of perfumed soaps or lotions. Sweet scents can get bees’ attention, so even floral-scented soaps or baby lotions can draw them out. For summer, it’s wise to make a switch to unscented toiletries and personal care products for children.
Be careful with food outdoors. We all love a summertime picnic, but unfortunately, insects do, too. Jams and sweets are a magnet for bees, as are sodas and fruit juices. Be extra wary around open containers, as a bee can fly in and sting kids as they drink.
Dress down. Insects don’t have exceptional eyesight, but they are perfectly primed to pick out bright colors and shapes. When headed outdoors, choose outfits for your child made of light, neutral-colored fabrics, as opposed to high-contrast or printed clothing.
Protect those toes. Stepping on an insect will not always kill it, and will often just incite it to sting. While wearing shoes might not help with this, it can protect the foot from the painful stinger. Ensure your child wears shoes at all times outdoors to keep the toes protected.
Know your surroundings. While insects can be found anywhere, keep on alert around areas that might be attractive to them. Any outdoor space with a surplus of flowering plants or trees might be a common attraction, and hives can nestle perfectly under play equipment or in porch eaves.
