Living With Pets and Pet Allergies | Covenant Allergy and Asthma
Pets are a loving part of our family, but for allergy sufferers, pets can cause uncomfortable symptoms. However, if you (or your child) want to bring a pet into the home, there are steps you can take to ensure that everyone stays happy and comfortable.
The Hypoallergenic Myth
While many designer dog breeds and fancy cats are advertised as being hypoallergenic, the unfortunate truth is that a hypoallergenic dog or cat does not exist. Pet allergies are caused by the immune system having a reaction to pet dander or saliva—meaning even hairless animals can be a culprit.
While hair can certainly hang on to dander and other allergens longer, pet allergens can be extremely resilient and can cling to most surfaces within the home.
Selecting the Right Animal for Allergy Relief
While no animal with fur is truly hypoallergenic, there are some options that are known to cause fewer allergy symptoms among most sufferers. Some examples include:
Poodles and curly-haired dogs. These breeds tend to shed less, meaning less dander is left lying around.
Short-haired cats. They typically shed less than their long-haired counterparts, making short-haired cats a great choice.
Aquatic varieties. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Turtles, lizards and snakes might be unconventional, but their lack of dander means a lack of allergy symptoms.
Fluffy and tiny. Mice, gerbils and guinea pigs are a great compromise—while they still have hair and can cause allergies, because their home is in a cage instead of all over the house, they tend to inspire fewer symptoms.
Living With Pet Allergies
When it comes to living with pets, there are ways to make allergy symptoms more manageable for everyone in the household:
- Keep pets out of the bedroom.
- Keep surfaces in the home clear and uncluttered.
- Choose hard floors or short-pilled carpet.
- Brush the pet often, but have someone without allergies do so outdoors.
- Use an air filter and install HEPA filters to central air systems.
