Keeping a Healthy Home

Did you know that we create 90 percent of the dust in our homes? Our skin and various fabrics release particles and fibers that settle on the open surfaces of our home. With school starting back up again in the fall, allergies will once again start acting up – but there are things you can do to prevent allergy attacks! Ridding your home of dust and dirt allergens is the first step. Although we can never fully eliminate dust, you can remove a majority of it by doing these things:

  1. Get rid of the feather duster. Instead of using the old-fashioned feather duster on your home’s surfaces, go for the microfiber cloth! Not only is this cloth better for picking up dust particles, you can also save money by throwing it in the wash and reusing it! Dust wipes are convenient, but throwing them away and buying more on a consistent basis can get expensive.

  2. Vacuuming is important! Spend the money for a high-quality vacuum. Trust us, it’ll be worth it in the long run! Choose a vacuum that has a high-efficiency air filter that will trap even the tiniest dust and dirt particles. Also, change the bag…often! Many people don’t change their vacuuming bags often enough, and can potentially add more dust to your home’s air by recycling it when you vacuum.

  3. Change and wash the bedding. As you probably already know, a big percentage of dust is dead skin cells, and your bedding collects a lot of it. Wash and change your bedding frequently. Not only does this prevent it from becoming a major dust collector, but it also could potentially save you from illness! Germs gather on your sheets and pillowcases, so it’s always a good idea to change the bedding as often as you can.

  4. Clean the closet. Closets are big dust reservoirs! Clothes pick up skin particles and they shed fabric fibers, and hang in your closet collecting more dust. Bigger off-season items, like coats, can be stored away in plastic bins or placed in garment bags to prevent the fabric from releasing loose fibers. Wipe off clothes hangers and vacuum the carpets in your closets frequently to avoid dust buildup.

At Covenant Allergy and Asthma Care, we want your home to stay healthy and clean! Allergies are no fun, but you can prevent them by keeping unwanted dust and dirt out of your home.
