Got Asthma? Breathe Better this Summer | Covenant Allergy and Asthma
If you’re like the rest of us, you probably can’t believe it’s already July! Covenant Allergy and Asthma wants to help keep you happy and healthy this summer despite your asthma. Check out our tips below to enjoy a better season.
Stay Cool
When you have asthma, it’s helpful to avoid situations where you need to inhale very hot air. That means avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and whenever possible, making alternate plans on especially hot days.
Visit Your Allergist
Have your asthma symptoms been getting worse? You should not go through it alone or just learn to “live with it”. Make sure you see an allergist to work on your treatment plan. You might be able to change your medication dose or scheduling, or learn about new treatment options to help better your symptoms.
Deal with Allergies
Asthma and allergies often go hand in hand. It pays to know your summer allergy triggers, since they can also trigger your asthma. If you suspect you might have allergies, you can ask your doctor about getting tested. If you have any allergies, getting them under control will help your asthma too.
Tune into Air Quality
Make it a habit to check the air quality index everyday. On days when air quality is poor, try to stay indoors. If you plan to drive, keep your car windows closed and set the AC to recirculate so you prevent outdoor pollutants from entering the car.
Stay Inside
You know those extra-hot days where stepping outside for even a moment feels like entering a sauna? It’s natural for those particularly hot and humid days to exacerbate your asthma symptoms. Whenever possible, stay indoors with the AC turned on, especially during the hottest hours of the day. That means running errands early before the sun is at its peak.
Monitor Indoor Humidity
We can’t control the weather, but we can control many aspects of our home environment. Keep your indoor humidity to 50 percent or lower, and you’ll reduce allergens like dust mites and mold, which thrive in warm and moist environments.
