Five Tips for Navigating the Holidays with Food Allergies

The holidays are certainly a wondrous time, yet it’s no secret that they are also a common source of stress for so many Americans. When you, or someone you love, has food allergies, the holidays can be particularly challenging to navigate when food is such a big part of most celebrations. Below are some tips you might consider to enjoy the upcoming festivities without too much of a headache.

Be the host.
While this tip isn’t for everyone, some folks prefer to take on the role of the holiday host because it puts them in control what is being served. You can prepare a thoroughly safe menu and communicate to guests what they can and cannot bring into your house. And should you choose to serve any foods containing allergens, you get to designate separate areas where that allergen is allowed to help prevent any cross-contamination.

Keep it simple.
Make the holidays healthier for everyone by replacing recipe full of packaged ingredients with simply prepared whole foods. You might opt for roasted root vegetables with olive oil and herbs, a whole-grain rice pilaf with beans, a fresh fruit salad and lean proteins that haven’t been marinated or brined in any allergens.

Modify your favorites.
If you can’t get through the holidays without that favorite cookie or casserole, remember that allergen-free substitutes are better than ever–and frequently more accessible. You can replace wheat flours with gluten-free alternatives, eggs with ground flaxseed or applesauce, and peanut butter with sunflower butter. Even dairy has a wide range of acceptable substitutes today.

Stay clean.
Help prevent cross-contamination of any allergens by encouraging frequent hand washing and placing antibacterial hand wipes or sanitizer in multiple spots throughout your home. Keep an organized kitchen and wash dishes promptly.

Help the host.
If there are food allergies in your family, but you’re being hosted by others, offer to help them plan the menu, cook or shop. That way, you can help ensure there will be items that are safe for your family.
