Dealing with Holiday Asthma Triggers
The holiday season tends to lead to increased asthma symptoms for a few reasons. We tend to spend more time indoors, with the windows closed and the heat on.
Some of the most common indoor asthma triggers include dust mites, dust, pet dander, wood smoke, and secondhand smoke. Live Christmas trees may also flare asthma due to allergenic sap and molds. Digging through old boxes for holiday decorations may stir up dust and mold that’s accumulated in storage.
Long hours spent traveling in a car, train, or plane can exacerbate asthma as well, from taking in stale, recirculated air. When families get together to celebrate there’s an increased risk of spreading viral infections that can bring on asthma flares.
Finally, emotional stress can be another holiday asthma trigger. The work, cooking and gift preparations, the hurry, and number of social engagements all add stress. Researchers have found a link between high levels of stress and increased asthma symptoms.
So how can you enjoy the holiday season and minimize your asthma flares? Check out these tips:
Take your medications as prescribed.
In addition to your prescribed medications, be sure to carry your rescue medications when traveling. You want to be prepared in case you experience an asthma flare when pharmacies are closed.
Decorate with care.
Individuals with asthma should avoid trimming live trees, or digging through a dusty attic for ornaments and decorations. If you choose a live tree, keep it on the porch or in the garage for a few days before bringing it inside to reduce some mold and pollen.
Have an asthma action plan.
Work with your doctor to develop a written plan that outlines the steps you should take to prevent your asthma from getting worse, and also when you should call your doctor or go to the emergency room.
Manage your stress.
Plan ahead so you’re not rushing at the last minute to complete your shopping and cooking. Keep in mind that there’s increased pressure during the holidays to entertain, volunteer, and participate in festivities. You’ll need to set boundaries and limit your stressors.
