6 Allergy Tips for the New School Year
It’s that time of year again! Are your kids ready for a new school year? Parents of children with allergies should take some extra steps to ensure their kids are prepared.
Ask your child’s school for any paperwork that may need to be filled out for kids with allergies. Find out whether they need any paperwork from your child’s doctor. Inquire when the school has a nurse on-site, how any allergic reactions will be handled, and how you’ll be notified.
Be sure to provide all teachers, the school nurse, and administrators with an updated action plan, so they know exactly what to do if your child has an allergic reaction.
Find out where allergy medications will be stored at your child’s school. When you send any medication to school, make sure it’s well-labeled, hasn’t expired, and that both your child, their teachers, and the school nurse know when and how to use it.
Help your child understand what they’re allergic to, as well as their triggers. Your child needs to learn how to avoid an allergic reaction, as well as what to do in case they have one.
If your child is susceptible to severe allergic reactions, make sure they wear a medic-alert bracelet to help inform others of the allergies, so responders can quickly make informed decisions about how to care for them in an emergency.
All caregivers should be informed of how to act in an allergy emergency. That includes bus drivers, after-school-program employees, athletic coaches, and babysitters.
