4 Tips to Minimize Winter Allergens | Covenant Allergy & Asthma

Winter is coming, but that doesn’t mean that allergies are a thing of the past. If you experience allergy symptoms in the winter months, a common cause is indoor allergens. The most common indoor allergy triggers include dust mites, pet dander and mold. These are year-round allergens which never go away and are frequently responsible for perennial allergic rhinitis, as opposed to seasonal allergies which are triggered by pollen in the spring and fall months. Covenant Allergy and Asthma has tips to help you get better control of your indoor triggers this winter season.

Can you tell the difference between a cold and allergies?

Lower your indoor humidity.
Both mold and dust mites thrive in environments with a humidity level above 50 percent. To help keep the baddies at bay, use a dehumidifier to keep your humidity below 45 percent at least–or under 35 percent for optimal results.

Upgrade your filtration.
Think about adding a HEPA filter to your central furnace, if you have one. The HEPA filter will help trap dust mites and mold spores from infiltrating your whole house. Also use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to prevent allergens from getting back into the air.

Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting.
Sad but true: vacuuming is not enough to remove all dust mites and pet dander from carpeting. People with severe indoor allergies can experience a lot of relief by getting rid of carpeting whenever possible.

Set up your bedroom for success.
Allergy-proof your bedding! Cover the mattress and pillows with zippered, dust-proof covers. Wash your sheets and blankets weekly in hot water. If pet dander triggers your allergies, keep cats and dogs out of your bedroom and off of your bed.
