Coping With Allergies

You don’t want to be stuck indoors when the beauty of fall is all around you. So let’s look at some ways you can ease your allergies:

First, you want to determine exactly what allergens you are reacting to.

Knowing whether you react to pollen or mold or ragweed is an important first step in avoiding the allergen and treating the allergy. You can undergo allergy testing to uncover what you are allergic to.

Second, you can try over-the-counter medications to find relief from sneezing, coughing, itching and other allergy symptoms. OTC meds like antihistamines are often an effective first step in treatment.

Third, you want to make sure when your allergies are really acting up that you spend time indoors in order to get a break from your symptoms.

Check the pollen forecast to learn when there’s a high pollen count outdoors. Although working out indoors might not be your idea of fun, sometimes taking your exercise routine inside can help give your nose and sinuses relief.

Finally, if you are really beginning to feel sick due to allergies, listen to your body and rest and drink lots of fluids.

If you begin to feel worse and not better after a few days, an allergy may not be the culprit at all—you may have some other type of illness. Therefore, if you aren’t feeling better after a few days, check in with a doctor to find out what’s causing your symptoms.
